President Signed the Law on Regulation of Legal Issues on Territory Contaminated by Chornobyl Disaster

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed the law “On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine on Regulation of Legal Issues on Territory Contaminated by Chornobyl Disaster”.

The document specifies the characteristics of land use, special use of water, implementation of urban development activities, protection of atmospheric air on the territory of the Exclusion Zone and Unconditional (Mandatory) Resettlement Area to ensure the implementation of projects for conversion of the Shelter into environmentally safe system and reintegration of the affected area.

The law also regulates the issues on competence of central and local authorities to implement the powers in the Exclusion Zone.

At the same time, President Resolution No. 174 dated 26 April 2016 “On the Establishment of Chornobyl Radioecological Biosphere Reserve”, which aims at preserving the natural state of the most typical natural Polissya reserves, support and improvement of the barrier function of Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, stabilization of the hydrological regime, remediation of the territories contaminated with radionuclides and contribution to organization and conduct of international scientific research, shall come into effect.
