International Efforts to Overcome Consequences of Chernobyl Accident to Be Continued

President Petro Poroshenko highlighted that the international community should continue its efforts to overcome consequences of the Chernobyl accident and complete relevant projects.

“This year we have reached an important stage – completion of the UN Action Plan on Chernobyl and the Decade of Recovery and Sustainable Development of the Regions Affected by the Chernobyl Accident. However, there is a clear need to continue international efforts for overcoming consequences of the Chernobyl accident and completion of relevant projects”, he said during the speech at the UN General Assembly.

The President emphasized that despite the challenges Ukraine is faced with, the country is fully faithful to achieving the Goals of Sustainable Development adopted last year by the UN General Assembly.

The President highlighted that Ukraine continues to work on fulfilling its obligations at the national level primarily related to ensuring healthy environment and stable power supply, promoting gender equality, combating corruption.

“As a member of “The Group of Friends of the Climate” Ukraine has contributed to reaching consensus regarding the comprehensive agreement on climate change. We completed all ratification procedures on the Paris agreement in a very short period and today during a high-level meeting deposited our ratification instruments”, said Poroshenko.
