Within XII International Conference “Problems of Modern Nuclear Energy” held on 16-18 November 2016 in Kharkiv, Artem Symonov, expert of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS), spoke on the problems of ensuring computer security of NPP I&C systems.

The international community for over 10 years is dealing with computer security of nuclear installations. This issue is urgent for the world, including Ukraine. The main tasks in the area are to develop the relevant regulatory framework and implement practical measures on the protection against cyber threats.

“The reason for increased attention to this subject is the possible negative impact on the safety of nuclear installations in violation of computer security and large-scale transfer from analog NPP instrumentation and control systems to digital ones. The latter are quite vulnerable to cyber threats”, commented Artem Symonov.

At present, SSTC NRS experts are completing review and analysis of documents on computer security of the International Atomic Energy Agency, International Electrotechnical Commission and United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. “This will allow us to use the best world experience in the regulatory document of Ukraine on computer security of NPP I&C systems, which is under development by SSTC NRS experts”, summed up Artem Symonov.
