Ostap Semerak, the Minister for Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, is confident that allocation of budget funds for the implementation of measures to ensure functioning of Chornobyl Radiation and Environmental Biosphere Reserve is a necessary step to transform the Exclusion Zone into an environmentally safe area.
He stated this when commenting on Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine “On Amendments to Para. 3 of the Procedure on Using the State Budget Funds to Maintain Environmentally Safe State in the Exclusion Zones” approved by the Government.
It should be recalled that last year the Presidential Decree established the Chornobyl Radiation and Environmental Biosphere Reserve to maintain the most typical natural complexes of Polissia in the natural state, maintain and improve the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone’s barrier function, stabilize hydrological mode and rehabilitate the territories contaminated with radionuclides.
It became one of the largest institutions for environmental protection in Ukraine with a total area of 227,000 hectares.
According to the Minister, the Government approved the decision to allocate funds under the budget program “Maintenance of Environmentally Safe State in the Exclusion Zones” in order to ensure functioning of this new reserve.
These funds will be spent for labor, utility services, purchase of specialized equipment and inventory.
The territory of the reserve includes Ivankiv and Polissia districts in Kyiv oblast within the Exclusion Zone.
