SNRIU Issued License to Energoatom Company for Construction and Commissioning of Centralized SFSF

On 7 July 2017, Acting Chairman of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, Borys Stoliarchuk, handed over the license for the construction and commissioning of the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility (Centralized SFSF) to the President of the Energoatom Company, Yuriy Nedashkovsky.

“Currently, the operating organization has met all the conditions envisaged by the nuclear legislation on safe construction and commissioning of the Centralized SFSF. The amount of work done is extremely large. In order to develop energy independence of our state and save budget funds, the SNRIU according to the established procedure has decided to issue the license for construction and development of the facility”, Borys Stoliarchuk noted. According to the head of the institution, Holtec International technologies, which will be used during the construction of the Central SFSF have already confirmed their reliability and safety. Sweden, Belgium and Spain already had the opportunity to learn it by their own experience.

President of the Energoatom Company, Yuriy Nedashkovsky, thanked the staff of the SNRIU and the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety for fruitful cooperation.

“We waited for this day more than 12 year. Indeed, the great work was done, but obstacles on the way were none the less. Legislative regulation of all issues on the construction of a new nuclear facility of state importance, solution of land issue, search of reliable, safe technologies, licensing process; we have properly overcome all these challenges. At the time, the Energoatom Company faced with a new, strategically important task for the state: completion of Centralized SFSF construction and its further operation in order to ensure energy independence of Ukraine”, the President of the Energoatom Company summed up.
