In Exclusion Zone, Ukrainian and Japanese Scientists Arrange Research Sites to Study Radionuclide Transfer by Water

Recently, a delegation of Japanese experts in the field of environmental monitoring from the Institute of Radioecology of the University of Fukushima (Japan) visited the exclusion zone.

The visit was arranged within the joint Ukrainian-Japanese scientific and technical program SATREPS and the project “Improvement of Environmental Radiation Monitoring and The Legislative Framework for Environmental Remediation of Radioactively Contaminated Territories”. The main objective of this Project is to strengthen the technical level of radiation control and the legislative framework in Ukraine for environmental restoration of radioactively contaminated territories, monitoring and modeling of the new zoning in the exclusion zone.

During the visit, Japanese scientists met with SSE “EcoCenter” management and experts and discussed technical issues on monitoring of water intakes in the exclusion zone.

Joint surveys of sites were performed at which radionuclide migration by water from contaminated water intakes of rivers will be studied under the Project. Equipping of research sites is planned in a few months.

“Today we can say that SATREPS Project has entered the stage of working consultations and visits at the level of managers in monitoring area and direct executors”, Serhii Kireiev, Director General of SSE “EcoCenter”, said during the meeting.
