40 Years of Nuclear Energy in Ukraine

On 26 September 1977 exactly 40 years ago at 19:21, a turbine generator No. 2 of Chornobyl NPP Unit 1 was switched to the grid. This day is considered the Day of Nuclear Energy in Ukraine.

14 August 1977 at 11:55 – full-scale reactor loading completed.

18 September 1977 at 16:17 – reactor power increase initiated.

26 September 1977 at 19:21 – turbine generator No. 2 switched to the grid.

02 November 1977 at 07:23 – turbine generator No. 1 switched to the grid.

21 December 1977 at 15:00 – unit power increase from 700 MW to 800 MW.

24 January 1978 at 18:15 – Chornobyl NPP Unit 1 generated the first billion kW/h of energy.

16 November 1978 – initial criticality of Chornobyl NPP Unit 2 ensured.

22 April 1979 – Chornobyl NPP generated first 10 billion kW/h of energy.

21 August 1984 – Chornobyl NPP generated first 100 billion kW/h of energy.

Chornobyl NPP faced a lot: there were many achievements and victories on its way, and there was a sad page in history. One way or another, the plant was the first to generate kW/h and it gave birth to the nuclear power industry in Ukraine.

On behalf of Uatom.org editorial board, we congratulate all experts of nuclear power industry of Ukraine with this outstanding date! We express our sincere gratitude for selfless work that is so difficult, but extremely important. We wish you health, well-being, optimism and, of course, the safe use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
