President: This year the commissioning of a new safe confinement will be completed

During his visit to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, President Petro Poroshenko said that the commissioning of a new safe confinement was scheduled for December 2018.

“This year we will complete one of the important stages of transformation of the Shelter object into an environmentally safe system. In December, we are planning to commission a new safe confinement installed earlier. The installation of equipment and systems is being completed, adjustment of systems and elements is being carried out,” Petro Poroshenko said. At the same time, he noted that he did not accelerate the launch, because “quality and safety are the most important criteria it must meet”.

The Head of State also noted that a complex of solid radioactive waste management and a liquid radioactive waste processing plant should be put into operation in 2018 as well.

Petro Poroshenko reminded that last week, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine had adopted in the first reading the Law on Amendments to the State Program for Chernobyl NPP Decommissioning.

“Everything is clearly planned – what should be done and who should do that. I am convinced that the progress demonstrated over the past 4 years is unprecedented. This is, inter alia, noted by our international partners, donors, EU states, USA, EBRD,” the President informed.

“To date, effective functioning, construction, launch of this scheme is a direct responsibility of the Ukrainian authorities and our international partners,” the Head of State summed up.
