IAEA Delegation Official Visit to SNRIU

On 12 June 2018, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine arranged an official visit of the delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The purpose of this event was to discuss the IAEA safeguards implementation in Ukraine.

Specialists of the national nuclear regulator, Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education and Science, State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, Institute for NPP Safety Problems, National Scientific Center “Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology” and Energoatom participated in this event.

SNRIU Chairman Hryhorii Plachkov opened the event wishing all the participants inspiration in the work and significant results.  

In turn, Director of C Operations Division of the IAEA Safeguards Department Haroldo Barroso Junior thanked for meeting arrangement and the opportunity to discuss the IAEA safeguards implementation in Ukraine. “Special thanks to SNRIU specialists for their open communication, fruitful cooperation and support in implementing the new approach to implement safeguards at the state level”, Haroldo Barroso Junior underlined.      

The details on implementing the unannounced IAEA inspections in Ukraine were discussed. Particular attention was paid to inspections of spent fuel assemblies with long cooling period, low burnout, as well as those that are damaged and stored in spent fuel pools. Participants did not forget to discuss the current state of the dry spent fuel storage facility (ISF-2), New Safe Confinement and centralized spent fuel storage facility (centralized SFSF).

“Every time we meet in Ukraine, we discuss how to improve our cooperation and make it more efficient and fruitful. I think, this meeting will not be an exception and we will find the ways to improve the effectiveness of the safeguards implementation in Ukraine. We will implement it as a unified well-coordinated team”, Haroldo Barroso Junior summed up.
