Ukrainian Scientific Institutions Signed Investment Agreement with China

On 26 October 2018, ceremonial events took place in Qingdao (People’s Republic of China) on the occasion of signing an Investment Agreement between the administrative committee of the Qingdao Free Economic and Technological Development Zone and the Joint Venture “China–Ukraine Xianchu Nuclear Energy Technology Co., Ltd.”. The Parties to the Joint Venture are the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS), Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (ISP NPP), and Qingdao Xianchu Energy Development Group, China.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Ukrainian Embassy in China, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, SSTC NRS, ISP NPP, Government, and scientific organizations of China.

“The ceremonial events on the occasion of signing the Agreement arose a great interest. The events were highlighted in China’s regional news”, said Dmytro Gumenyuk, Head of the SSTC NRS Safety Analysis Unit, who participated in these events. “And this is not surprising since a private Chinese company is establishing cooperation with Ukraine in the field of nuclear energy for the first time”.

According to the Investment Agreement, the Joint Venture “China–Ukraine Xianchu Nuclear Energy Technology Co., Ltd.” intends to invest into the project for establishing a Xianchu Alternative Energy Research Institute and to build its headquarters in the Qingdao Free Economic and Technological Development Zone. The project provides for the creation of a research laboratory and production facilities for research, development and production in the areas of radiation-protected robotics, ventilation and cooling equipment for nuclear power plants, rehabilitation of contaminated territories, etc.

“Given the pace of developing China’s nuclear power industry and the significant experience of Ukraine in this area, cooperation between our countries, in my opinion, has good prospects”, concluded SSTC NRS Director Ihor Shevchenko. “In the near future, we will get the first results of the Joint Venture’s activities”.
