SNRIU Chairman Hryhorii Plachkov participates in the regular Plenary Meeting of WENRA

SNRIU Chairman Hryhorii Plachkov participates in the regular Plenary Meeting of the Western European Nuclear Regulators Association (WENRA), which takes place on 6-9 November 2018 in Switzerland under support of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI).

The Plenary Meeting considers strategic issues on further WENRA development and reports on working group activities in the areas of NPP nuclear safety, radioactive waste and spent fuel management, decommissioning, and safety of research installations. The WENRA Development Strategy Project for 2019-2023 provides further strengthening of WENRA’s leading position in forming the European Nuclear Safety Policy by developing and implementing appropriate reference safety levels.
It should be emphasized that full membership of SNRIU in WENRA is a positive achievement of Ukraine in the international arena. According to the WENRA Development Strategy, no further expansion of WENRA is envisaged, which is supported by SNRIU.

Currently WENRA strategic goals, vision and mission on further development of the organization are discussed and preliminarily approved. In particular, it is believed that WENRA mission is joint work of national regulatory authorities for continuous improvement and harmonization of nuclear safety to the reasonably achievable extent and for protection of the public and the environment.

During the Plenary Meeting, Hryhorii Plachkov informed on the results of a recent self-assessment of the national regulatory framework on radwaste and spent fuel management for compliance with the WENRA reference levels and their peer review by WENRA members at the meeting in September 2018 in Slovenia.
