The number of unregistered sources of radiation is continued to drop
During the first quarter of 2019, regional inspections of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate together with the relevant structural units of the central executive authorities of Ukraine ensured the detection and removal of radioactive materials from an illicit trafficking, as well as their return to regulatory control.
The detection of radiation contaminated scrap metal entering metallurgical enterprises of Ukraine continues. Thus, on March 26, 2019, at the Azovstal Metallurgical Combine detained a wagon with scrap metal, where the scale of the measuring device with radium 226 was detected and removed. The equivalent dose rate (EDR) at a distance of 0.1 m from the surface was 3.2 μSv/h .
On February 28, 2019, the State Border Service of Ukraine at the crossing point of the state border of Ukraine with Poland, Shegini, was seized a stereo artillery tube with an increased level of gamma radiation, radium 226, from Ukrainian who was going to visit Poland.
Since the gamma radiation EDR of the detected objects exceeded the established sanitary standards, they were seized and sent for their further safe and secure storage at the Ukrainian State Corporation ‘Radon‘.
