The second volume of the “Chornobyl KGB Dossier”, entitled “From Construction to Disaster”, covers the period from the start of construction of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant in the 1970s to the commissioning of the Shelter (November 1986).
The book includes documents of the State Security Committee of the Ukrainian SSR, which are now stored in the Branch State Archives of the Security Service of Ukraine.
Through the prism of the activities of the Soviet secret services, the publication reflects the course of construction of the station, the investigation of the causes of the accident on April 26, 1986 and the first months of liquidation of its consequences.
Among the documents there are: reports of accidents that occurred before 1986, a transcript of telephone conversations at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant on the night of the accident on April 26, a copy of the first report of the accident, information on the investigation and construction of the “Sarcophagus” (“Shelter”).
The first volume “Public Sentiment. ChNPP in the Post-Emergency Period” of the “Chornobyl KGB Dossier” documentary collection was published in 2019. It contained documents from 1986-1991, which covered the post-Chornobyl life — public sentiment, daily life, measures to eliminate the consequences of the disaster.
