The government has taken another step to introduce a new RW classification

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine supported the draft resolution “On Amendments to Clause 6 of the Technical Regulation on Packaging Kits for Storage and Disposal of Radioactive Waste”. This regulation is brought in line with the Law of Ukraine dated 17.10.2019 № 208-IX “On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine on Improving Legislation in the Sphere of Radioactive Waste Management”.

The changes were necessary for the introduction in Ukraine of a new system for the classification of radioactive waste, which meets accepted international safety standards and is based on the long-term safety of the final disposal of radwaste.

We will remind, since 2019 under the Ukrainian legislation radwaste is divided into such classes:

  • Very low level waste;
  • Low level waste;
  • Intermediate level waste;
  • High level waste.
