Sizewell C NPP Could Use Recycled Uranium
During Nuclear 2021 conference, organized by the UK Nuclear Industry Association, the UK energy company director of financing, Julia Pyke, announced that EDF Energy will continue work to construct two EPR units, which will enable further work on spent nuclear fuel recycling technology.
Sizewell C is working to develop technology that will allow the production of fresh nuclear fuel from recycled uranium. This will reduce the amount of uranium ore fuel and reduce the NPP impact on the environment. For this, the spent nuclear fuel will be reprocessed to separate the reusable uranium from high-level wastes for disposal.
Currently, the company is only waiting for obtaining the state permit for carrying out such activities, which is expected to be received in the coming months.
