28 Years of Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials and Nuclear Facilities in Ukraine

28 December is an important date for Ukraine’s nuclear energy, as the establishment of physical protection of nuclear materials and nuclear facilities is marked today.

This day was initiated in 1993, when the President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk issued a Decree On Measures for the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Nuclear Facilities in Ukraine, with the main objective to prevent illegal actions on nuclear material and nuclear facilities used for peaceful purposes, and establishing the legal basis for their physical protection.

It is worth reminding, that according to the Law of Ukraine On Physical Protection of Nuclear Installations, Nuclear Materials, Radioactive Waste, Other Sources of Ionizing Radiation: physical protection is the “activity in the field of nuclear energy aimed at securing nuclear installations, nuclear materials, radioactive waste, other radiation sources and strengthening the non-proliferation regime.”
