Frozen Mushrooms from Volyn Turned out to Be Radioactive

A consignment of frozen mushrooms exported to the city of Czersk (Poland) was detained at the Polish-Ukrainian border. A high content of radioactive cesium-137 (1540 +/- 33 Bq/kg) was detected in the cargo. The goods belonged to an entrepreneur from Kamin-Kashyrsky, Volyn region. 

Through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), the information was received by the Main Directorate of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Volyn Oblast. The goods were withdrawn from circulation for further disposal. 

Just to remind, the permissible level of cesium-137 is regulated in accordance with Order No. 255 of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine of 19 August 1997 “On Approval of Permissible Levels of Radionuclides Cs-137 and Sr-90 in Food and Drinking Water (DR-97)”.
