Main Priority Areas of State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine for 2022 and Topical Issues on Safety of Nuclear Energy Use

SNRIU has identified priority areas for its activities in 2022. During the meeting of the SNRIU Board, they were presented by Acting SNRIU Chairman Oleh Korikov.

According to the approved document, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine focuses on strengthening independence, institutional stability and efficiency of state safety regulation of nuclear energy use, and improvement of oversight in nuclear energy use. The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate also continues to provide regulatory support of activities in nuclear energy use, to take measures for fulfilling international obligations by Ukraine. At the same time, it is planned to expand cooperation with the United States to develop approaches to safety assessment and licensing of new types of nuclear installations and to resolve the issue of the transfer of computer codes to operating organization Energoatom.

Priority areas are also the provision of administrative services in electronic form, development, support and protection of the SNRIU information and telecommunications system.

At the Board meeting, attention was focused on topical issues in nuclear energy use that need to be addressed, in particular, on the integrated process of radioactive waste management, ability of the operating organization for radioactive waste management Central Enterprise for Radioactive Waste Management to perform functions of the operating organization, worsening of the safety situation at the site of the Prydniprovskyi Chemical Plant, etc.

SNRIU, for its part, within its competence, plans a number of specific measures to address these issues, in particular, it will immediately apply to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and central executive authorities with relevant proposals and strengthen state oversight over the activities of enterprises.

SNRIU
