The ANL Follow-up Project in Ukraine for Future Nuclear Engineers
The second specialized training for students of Ukrainian polytechnic Universities starts next week at the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS). The educational project initiated by the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL, USA) is aimed at popularizing small modular reactor (SMR) technologies among future nuclear engineers.
Organizational and financial support is provided by the Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of State in the framework of American-Ukrainian cooperation in energy, nuclear and radiation safety matters.
Over the course of three weeks, 13 graduate students of Kyiv, Lviv, and Odesa Polytechnic Universities will attend the course of lectures delivered by the best specialists of the SSTC NRS and the Argonne National Laboratory. The topics will cover licensing of small modular reactors, safety aspects of this technology, economic components and their potential role in the future energy network of Ukraine. In addition, the course participants will be acquainted with the latest technologies of hydrogen energy.
As last year, at the end of the training course, each student will present his “graduation” thesis, which he will work on throughout his studies and will have the opportunity to develop his university diploma project at the SSTC NRS premises. Actually, several students, graduates of the project in 2021 received such an opportunity, moreover, as an indicator of the necessity and effectiveness of participation in training organized by the Argonne National Laboratory, there is the fact that today two students of Kyiv polytechnic Institute Vladyslav Bakanov and Maksym Dzerun are employed by the SSTC NRS.
Upon completion of the project, the best project participants will be given the opportunity to complete an internship at the Argonne National Laboratory, the selection will be made based on the evaluation results of final papers.
The SSTC NRS acts as the main Contractor of the project, providing technical materials and ensuring lecturing of theoretical material to students. All lectures and communication with the lecturers will be in English.
