The EU will Provide Ukraine with 5.5 Million Potassium Iodide Pills

On August 26, the EU received a request from the government of Ukraine for potassium iodide pills as part of preventive safety measures to increase the protection of the public residing near the Zaporizhzhya NPP. Potassium iodide pills will be used in limited scenarios to prevent the effects of inhaling or swallowing radioactive iodine that is absorbed by the thyroid gland.

In return, the European Union will provide 5.5 million potassium iodide pills to protect Ukrainians from possible radiation exposure. In particular, 5 million will be transferred from the strategic reserves of the European Union, another 500 thousand will be provided by Austria.

According to the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Janez Lenarchych, no nuclear power plant should be used as a war theater. It is unacceptable that the lives of the civilians are exposed to danger. All hostilities around the Zaporizhzhya NPP shall be stopped immediately.
