About Website

The issues associated with nuclear energy use have always attracted attention of the general public. This is because nuclear energy plays an important role in shaping the energy balance of the global economy on the one hand and nuclear technologies used for power production are potentially hazardous if requirements for nuclear safety, radiation protection and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons are not met on the other hand.

After the accidents at Kyshtym (1957), Chernobyl (1986) and Fukushima-Daiichi (2011) and a series of other notorious events, the society has realized that nuclear safety, radiation protection and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons are important and significant for life. These issues have attracted great interest of the general public, which in turn necessitated the provision of people with reliable and easy-to-understand information by competent and responsible bodies.

One of the main principles in Ukraine’s state nuclear energy policy is to provide the public with open and accessible information (Law of Ukraine No. 39/95-VR dated 8 February 1995).

Modern information and communication technologies are widely used for more efficient and effective implementation of this principle.

The resolution of the SNRIU Board dated 30 September 2010 determined the need to establish a new auxiliary web resource to increase awareness of the general public and young people in areas such as nuclear safety, radiation protection and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. In accordance with this resolution, the SNRIU with support of the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority launched a project on informational support, within which the Uatom.org website was developed. The project contractor upon SNRIU agreement is presented by the SSTC NRS.

Website main tasks:

  • raise awareness of target groups on nuclear safety, radiation protection and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons
  • improve public awareness on various aspects of nuclear energy use
  • increase interest in this subject among the general public and young people
  • engage leading national and foreign experts working in this area into development of informational documents.

This platform provides a unique opportunity to cooperate with the public. The website sets forth useful, competent and reliable information to improve understanding of nuclear and radiation safety and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons by the public.
