Kyiv public opinion poll on environing radiation sources hazard

Many people have radio phobia: i.e., the fear of radiation. However, it can be related to the fact that we know a little about radioactivity. We decided to check this. A number of Kyiv citizens agreed to take part in the survey and frankly answered our questions.

What is your opinion about how many radiation sources surround us? Which one do we encounter most often? What are the most harmful?

I think that there are quite a lot of radiation sources, but I cannot say exactly what are they, because I have not enough knowledge in this sphere. How harmful they are? Well, nobody is immune to radiation disease.

How can one find out about the radioactivity of an object? What signs of radioactivity do you know?

In general, a Geiger counter, for example. I do not think that somebody carries it in his/her pocket every day. Is it possible to detect it visually? I think that there should be some small darkening on the object caused by radiation, probably. It will not vibrate, but I am not sure about this.

In your opinion, what should a person do with objects suspected of being radioactive?

A person should put it into a some kind of a sealed container and notify the security services.

How can people become more aware of the need to surrender radiation sources?

Through the social networks, Youtube, but not just any propaganda or viral advertising, because people usually skip them and do not read. Only few people watch news as such. However, sometimes they do read or watch something non-intrusive in social networks.

What is your opinion about how many radiation sources surround us? Which one do we encounter most often? What are the most harmful?

Yes, there are many of them. I read about Chornobyl and about the exclusion zone. In some places of this zone, the radiation background is lower than probably in some places in Kyiv. In general, it seems to me. Cars and factories that are in the city increase the background and they are the main sources.

How can one find out about the radioactivity of an object? What signs of radioactivity do you know?

One can start to give off light. However, I do not know much about this. If I take it and if I feel bad because of it, surely I will start to think that something is wrong with it. Probably, a witch put a spell on it and that is why I feel sick.

In your opinion, what should a person do with objects suspected of being radioactive?

It is necessary to surrender it. You should call the police or whom you should call in such cases. In general, you can Google it and read what to do, whom to call and whom to surrender it. There are a lot of them in the exclusion zone. I saw the videos of the stalkers in the exclusion zone and that all metal objects there were cut out and sold for scrap somewhere. For example, the dump of cars, which remained after the liquidation of the accident. In the beginning of 2000, this car parking was full of cars and now there is practically nothing.

How can people become more aware of the need to surrender radiation sources?

One can put an advertisement on HDRezka website. For example, when people watch “Game of Thrones”, two advertisements are shown before the series episode. I believe that ninety percent of people will become aware of this. The main thing is not to skip it.

I am the person who witnessed the Chornobyl accident in 1986. I was studying at school then and I am still concerned about the fact that ChNPP has not been finally closed. There are a lot of them and we ourselves are sources of radiation. Mobile phone, of course. What else? There are plenty of waves, which connect the communication means, as well as radio waves. They are not visible, so it is impossible to understand and make a conclusion about their real amounts. At the same time, we coexist with them.

What is your opinion about how many radiation sources surround us? Which one do we encounter most often? What are the most harmful?

How can one find out about the radioactivity of an object? What signs of radioactivity do you know?

I do not know what are the external signs, besides the third eye or something like that. I know some special devices catching radiation. I know only them are the way for us to find out about radiation.

In your opinion, what should a person do with objects suspected of being radioactive?

I have no idea. Do you mean where to put it? I suppose there are special storage and disposal points. For example, I know that there are points for the disposal of thermometers, batteries and such. However, I think this is just about money laundering, because the thermometer is put into this container and it may be broken down, because it is with mercury. Therefore, the situation is the same as with the reforms, when they are implemented, but they do not properly work. So, yes, I suppose you have to Google and search places where you can dispose them.

How can people become more aware of the need to surrender radiation sources?

Of course, by raising awareness of people, by educating them. Currently, the education is now provided not from the elder people to younger people, but vice versa. Therefore, it is necessary to train young people. People up to 25. Well, okay, not up to 25, but young people to 25-30. How can it be done? Nobody reads the mass-media mow. People now read Telegram, Instagram channels, Viber and such. These resources should be used for education. The effective way is also to make examples: look, you can throw this object into a simple trashcan, but then your grandchild may grow up with a sixth finger, for example.

What is your opinion about how many radiation sources surround us? Which one do we encounter most often? What are the most harmful?

It seems to me that there are plenty of them. As far as I remember, it is a microwave oven. It has a side from which it is better not to come close to it. I forget all the time from which one. Then there is radiation dust that remained after Chornobyl. We cannot trace it in any way. These can be some old buildings, reused bricks, but I do not know how to track all this without a counter. The remaining radiation comes from waves, I believe. Not so many sources? One can be exposed in cancer treatment and some other ways. X-ray, fluorography and it cannot be done more often than once a year or once in two years.

How can one find out about the radioactivity of an object? What signs of radioactivity do you know?

Using the counter. It seems to me that there is a Geiger counter. It is impossible to detect radiation in any other way.

You should hope that it is not radioactive. You should get that counter, buy it or take it. Probably, there are some special services.

How can people become more aware of the need to surrender radiation sources?

We need information about these very establishments. For example, I have light bulbs, which are not LEDs, but mercury ones, which also consume little electricity. However, I do not know, where to surrender them and I put them into a box. I am trying to find out where I should hand them over. There is no available information. Where it should be given? For example, in metro, on some billboards with directions to large points where one can hand such objects. It seems more or less understandable with batteries. Still, there is no information for light bulbs and for objects that can be contaminated.

What is your opinion about how many radiation sources surround us? Which one do we encounter most often? What are the most harmful?

There are a lot of them. I read that everything decays: heavy elements decay into lighter elements. Radiation is everywhere and even in the soil. However, radiation is the thing typical for all chemical elements. I think that it is everywhere. I once read that people also emit radiation. What are the most harmful? I think they are the most harmful.

Shouldn’t you call to the Ministry to Emergencies?

How can people become more aware of the need to surrender radiation sources?

Social advertising. Billboards… Yes, I think billboards. It would be the most effective. Probably, it is necessary to distribute some monthly bulletins. This is not only for the capital. First of all, it is necessary… When I come to the capital, you have a lot of social advertising. I think this should be done under financing of some donors or foreign embassies. Distribute information in metro, for example, as well as information about vaccinations. There is no such information in other cities. It simply does not exist there. Therefore, it cannot be restricted only by Kyiv, because radiation is everywhere…

What is your opinion about how many radiation sources surround us? Which one do we encounter most often? What are the most harmful?

The first and the most active source of radiation that surrounds us from birth is the natural radiation background. These are cosmic rays, radioactive materials of earth, radionuclides inside us. The only way we can affect the level of natural background is to change the place of living or by ventilation of the apartment, since bathrooms and lavatories are usually the most contaminated places due to the accumulation of radon gas. By the way, the level of background radiation in Ukraine is one of the lowest in the world. The second place belongs to the medical exposure from diagnostic procedures. The problem of this radiation can be solved on a case by case basis: whether it is necessary, whether there will be more benefits than harm, whether it is possible to do without it.

How can one find out about the radioactivity of an object? What signs of radioactivity do you know?

The most important sign of radioactivity is the radiation hazard sign. This sign is applied to equipment or containers containing radioactive materials. This sign may look like a label, table or engraving on metal. Sometimes, glowing in the dark is the sign of the radioactivity of the object.

How can people become more aware of the need to surrender radiation sources?

Usually people are afraid to surrender radiation sources because of fears of criminal liability for the illegal possession of such sources. The fear makes people to throw such sources at dumps. However, you shall not be afraid!
