Public Opinion Poll: “In your opinion, what harm may the consumption of radioactively contaminated products cause?”

To check citizens’ awareness of nuclear and radiation safety issues, a poll was conducted by the Uatom.org Editorial Board in the Sviatoshyno district of Kyiv. Thank you sincerely for all who agreed to frankly answer our questions.

Oleksandr, 22, worker

1. Do you buy honey, mushrooms and fish in unregulated markets? If so, are you concerned about radiation contamination of these products?

“I do not buy. I have own honey: forty families of bees, I take honey from home. However, the issue of contamination is important, therefore I am concerned.”

2. How can you be sure that products from unregulated markets are not radioactively contaminated?

“Take the products to the laboratory, as we do. We check them not in Kyiv, in the Skvyra regional laboratory.”

3. In your opinion, what harm may the consumption of radioactively contaminated products cause?

“For whom? For the public? I think different diseases depending on an organism. The consumption of radioactively contaminated products may cause death as a maximum and the problem of digestion, for example as a minimum.”

“I never buy such products in unregulated markets, but I’m concerned about the issue of contamination”.

2. How can you be sure that products from unregulated markets are not radioactively contaminated?

“Well, I have a dosimeter since then. I think it may be used for measurement”.

3. In your opinion, what harm may the consumption of radioactively contaminated products cause?

“The main harm is cancer”.

“I do not buy, they buy for me, and so I do not care about it. The main thing is that it should be delicious. That’s all”.

2. How can you be sure that products from unregulated markets are not radioactively contaminated?

“No, honestly, never. I would think about it when all of these diseases are diagnosed”.

3. In your opinion, what harm may the consumption of radioactively contaminated products cause?

“If you get larger exposure dose, not good processes, diseases may be caused, etc…”

“I never buy. I do not do this at all. Of course, I’m concerned about radiation contamination. Especially mushrooms … People say that honey is more or less, but I’ m afraid to buy mushrooms at all. People buy but I’m afraid”.

2. How can you be sure that products from unregulated markets are not radioactively contaminated?

“|I don’t know, I don’t know”.

3. In your opinion, what harm may the consumption of radioactively contaminated products cause?

“From stomach problems and to death … For children, contaminated food is taboo at all. We, old are still stronger, as for children, their organisms are young, not strong”.

“We rarely buy, but we often collect mushrooms and berries. That is why, of course, I’m concerned of this issue”.

“If the forest is not in the area of radioactive hazard and not near the road, I think it is cleaner there”.

3. In your opinion, what harm may the consumption of radioactively contaminated products cause?

“First of all it is intoxication, oncology may be: not very good consequences …”

“I can say that I buy regularly. I bought mushrooms two or three times. I bought honey twice, blue berries once. However, I’m not concerned about contamination”.

2. How can you be sure that products from unregulated markets are not radioactively contaminated?

“I do not know such places but I would be interested if there were places available nearby, without queues, so as not to lose time”.

3. In your opinion, what harm may the consumption of radioactively contaminated products cause?

“Depends on health hazard degree and amount of harmful substances. There can be contamination in the atmosphere: exhaust emissions and gases are more harmful, because we breathe it every day. However, radionuclides may fall out once a season”.

“I don’t know”.

3. In your opinion, what harm may the consumption of radioactively contaminated products cause?

“Great, exactly great. Radiation affects everything. Liver, pancreatic gland, other diseases. That is all Chernobyl, unfortunately”.

“I do not buy anything in unregulated markets at all, and I do not collect. Our family does not consume forest products. In addition, I know what radiation means…”

2. How can you be sure that products from unregulated markets are not radioactively contaminated?

“It is necessary to use dosimeter”.

3. In your opinion, what harm may the consumption of radioactively contaminated products cause?

“Irreparable. Believe me, I know that. Radiation affects everything. Immune system and development. Everything. Especially for young, small children, such grandchildren as I have, it is prohibited at all. Unregulated markets are … like second-hand. It causes only harm”.

“I never buy honey, only fish and mushrooms when my dad and mom want. Of course, I’m concerned about contamination of products”.

“Well, I know only one way: you need to take these products to the laboratory. They will be checked there”.

3. In your opinion, what harm may the consumption of radioactively contaminated products cause?

“Great. Radiation contamination is very harmful to the organism and younger organism, for example, me and my sister becomes more affected. Of course, it’s important not to consume such products at all, know what to buy and take care of your health”.

“I do not buy fish at all; I buy honey only near the church when it is Savior of the Honey Feast Day. I do not eat mushrooms at all and I collect berries in Belarus. Only blueberries, but everything is okay there. However, it would be interesting to know about radiation contamination”.

2. How can you be sure that products from unregulated markets are not radioactively contaminated?

“We need to have a special device; however, I do not remember how it is called. Maybe a dosimeter?”

3. In your opinion, what harm may the consumption of radioactively contaminated products cause?

“First of all, it is possible to get poisoning by these products. Of course, these substances will be accumulated in the blood”.
