TRAINING OF NUCLEAR SPECIALISTS

The process of training nuclear specialists continues throughout working activities. However, it starts during choosing, entering and studying in a specialized educational institution.

There are nine educational institutions in Ukraine that train nuclear specialists: National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, Odesa National Polytechnic University, National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Vinnytsia National Technical University, National University of Water and Environmental Engineering, Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology, Kyiv Energy College and the only one of its kind Vocational Training School of Rivne NPP.

Prior to the Russian occupation of the Crimean peninsula, the Sevastopol Institute of Nuclear Energy and Industry, which was famous for its material and technical base and respectable teaching staff, was on this list. However, currently, it does not teach Ukrainian students.


National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”

According to QS World University Rankings 2019, Kyiv Polytechnic Institute is recognized as the best among Ukrainian higher educational establishments for the training of engineers in several specialties: Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing and Engineering – Electrical & Electronic.

Nuclear Power Plants and Engineering Thermal Physics Department of the Heat Power Engineering Faculty trains specialists in the management of nuclear power plants, modeling of neutronic and thermohydraulic processes in NPP equipment, solving problems of NPP reliability and safety.

Graduates have the exclusive right to obtain a license permitting to operate nuclear power plants. They can hold positions from engineer to NPP director general or work in other industry enterprises.

Since 2019, there has been a master’s program “Physical Protection and Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials” on the basis of the department, which was the first in Ukraine to train specialists in this area.

Students have the opportunity not only to study the fundamentals of physical nuclear safety, information security and design of physical protection systems, but also to assess vulnerability and identify threats, develop regulations, preventive measures to overcome threats, manage emergencies and accidents.

The training is conducted by highly professional teaching staff, including practitioners, experts who have completed internships at the University of Texas at the United States of America, the Sandia National Laboratory of the United States of America and participated in IAEA training courses.

Odesa National Polytechnic University

The Odesa National Polytechnic University has the highest rating among higher technical educational establishments of Odesa according to the data of the well-known independent ratings “TOP-200 Ukraine”, “Consolidated Rating of Ukrainian Higher Educational Establishments”, “Rating of Salaries of Ukrainian University Graduates According to Money Magazine”, “Rating of Ukrainian Higher Educational Establishments According to Scopus”, “Rating of Ukrainian Higher Educational Establishments of DOU Portal”.

Nuclear specialists are trained in the Institute of Energy and Computer-Integrated Control Systems in three departments: Nuclear Power Plants, Water and Fuel Technology, Computer Technologies of Automation.

The following specialties are available to students: Nuclear Energy, Dosimetry and Radiation Safety, Nuclear Physics and High Energy Physics, Radiation Control and Monitoring at Nuclear Power Plants, Technologies and Monitoring of Coolants at Nuclear Power Plants, Automated Control of Thermal Processes and Computer-Integrated Technologies and Production in Energy Industry”.

Study programs of the Odesa National Polytechnic University provide the possibility of student participation in academic mobility programs for study abroad lasting one semester. This gives the opportunity to students to receive additional education in higher educational establishments of Poland, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Turkey.

National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”

The Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute ranks third among all higher educational establishments of Ukraine and sixth in the international Webometrics Ranking of World’s Universities. Training of specialists for nuclear industry is carried out at the following departments: Heat Engineering and Energy Efficient Technologies, Electric Power Stations, Turbine Construction, Steam Generator Construction, Electrical Insulating and Cable Technique, Electric Power Transmission, which are included into the Educational and Scientific Institute of Energy, Electronics and Electromechanics.

Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv

Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv has the best result in terms of teaching among the six Ukrainian higher educational establishments, which were included into the World University Ranking. It occupies 277th place and got into the Silver League. It entered the Top 500 Universities of the World of the QS Rankings (Graduate Employability Rankings 2020), occupying a position in the group of 301-500.

Training of nuclear specialists is conducted at the Department of Nuclear Physics of the Faculty of Physics, Nuclear Energy specialization, Physics and Astronomy specialty. The internships of students are carried out in research centers, research institutes, establishments and laboratories of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Institute for Nuclear Research, Institute for Theoretical Physics, Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants, etc.), in leading foreign scientific laboratories, in Ukrainian state agencies and at enterprises of the relevant areas.

Students of the Department of Nuclear Physics of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv participate in scientific, technical and engineering developments, starting from the 3rd or 4th year of study. Laboratory activities cover all sections of the general course of physics.

Lviv Polytechnic National University

The Lviv Polytechnic National University is recognized as one of the best higher educational establishments in Ukraine for the training of engineers according to the QS World University Rankings 2019 in the following areas: Engineering & Technology, Physical Sciences, Computer Science and Business & Economics.

It ranks 751-800 in the overall ranking of the best universities in the world QS World University Rankings 2019.

Nuclear specialists are trained in the following departments: Heat Engineering, Thermal and Nuclear Power Plants, Electric Power Engineering and Control Systems of the Institute of Power Engineering and Control Systems.

Vinnytsia National Technical University

Personnel for nuclear industry are trained by the Department of Power Plants and Systems of the Faculty of Power Engineering and Electromechanics. The internships of students are carried out in working conditions during training, at nuclear power plants, at Dniester Cascade of Hydro-Electric Power Plants and Hydroelectric Pumped Electric Power Plants, Ladyzhyn Thermal Power Plant, etc.

Students of the Vinnytsia National Technical University are sent for internship in the leading universities of the world and can study at foreign universities under the academic mobility programs for students “Double Diploma”/”Two Diplomas” in higher educational establishments in Poland, Bulgaria, Georgia, the Czech Republic and Germany.

In 2019, this higher educational establishment was included into TOP-300 best universities (296th position) in the QS University Rankings: Eastern Europe and Central Asia, where more than 350 best universities from 24 countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia participated. The university ranks 40th in the Sci Verse Scopus Ranking.

According to TOP-200 Ukraine, the methodology of which is created according to the Berlin principles of university ranking, the Vinnytsia National Technical University in 2019 took 25th place among the universities of Ukraine. According to the consolidated ranking of Ukrainian higher educational establishments, the Vinnytsia National Technical University ranked the first place in 2019 among higher educational establishments of its region. It ranks seventh place among the establishments of the central region of Ukraine entering the prestigious top ten higher educational establishments.

National University of Water and Environmental Engineering

The National University of Water and Environmental Engineering ranks 64th in the TOP-200 Ukraine and 72nd in Ukraine according to Webometrics. This is the only higher educational institution in Ukraine in water management that have trained specialists for the power industry since its foundation.

The main departments are as follows: Hydropower, Heat Power Engineering and Hydraulic Machines, Hydraulic Engineering and Hydraulics in the Educational and Scientific Institute of Water and Environmental Engineering, Automation, Electrical and Computer-Integrated Technologies in the Educational and Scientific Institute of Automation, Cybernetics and Computer Technologies.

They offer the following specialties: Electrical Engineering (Heat Power Engineering), Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electromechanics, Smart Energy and Electrical Mobility, Energy Management and Energy Efficient Technologies.

The university implements the Erasmus+ academic mobility program together with the Lublin University of Technology, which envisages semester by semester study in Poland from the 4th year of study. Students participate in a summer camp on a European Grant Program from the International Visegrad Fund.

Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology

The Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology received a license to train bachelors in the specialties “Nuclear Energy” and “Chemical Technologies and Engineering” in 2018. Specialists in these areas are trained in the Department of Power Engineering of the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering and Department of Inorganic Substances and Ecology of the Faculty of Chemical Technologies and Ecology.

The Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology provides students with the opportunity to choose the place of internship, as well as offers companies with which it works closely.

According to scientometric indicators of the ranking database, the university ranks 16th among all higher educational establishments of Ukraine and second in Dnipro. The university is the only representative of the Dnipropetrovsk region in the international scientometric rating SCImago and ranks 11th among higher educational establishments in Ukraine.

According to Webometrics, the Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology ranks 34th among Ukrainian universities and fourth in the Dnipropetrovsk region. According to TOP-200 Ukraine 2019 created in accordance with the Berlin principles of university ranking, it ranks 68th among higher educational establishments in Ukraine. In the Consolidated Rating of Ukraine 2019, it ranks 66th among 240 among the higher educational establishments in Ukraine and 7th in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Students have the opportunity to do internships with involvement in international educational projects, including EU (Erasmus+). The geography of internship countries: Norway, Germany, Poland, France and China. A set of state and international projects are constantly implemented in the university.

Kyiv Energy College

In the sphere of nuclear energy, college graduates work in the specialty “Installation and Operation of Steam Generators of Nuclear Power Plants”.

Training is carried out in offices and laboratories equipped with all necessary equipment, models, stands, diagrams, simulators and technical means. Practical classes take place in the workshops: metalwork and mechanical, thermal power, electrical, welding workshops and workshops for installation and repair of automation and control and measuring devices.

Vocational Training School of Rivne NPP, State Enterprise NNEGC Energoatom

The vocational training school, which appeared at the same time as the nuclear power plant, is now a state institution of vocational education of the second level of accreditation. The vocational training school trains employees from among school graduates and retrains RNPP employees. Every year more than 70 students graduate from the educational institution.

The number of training places, as well as the range of professions for which the vocational training school trains, directly depends on the staffing needs of the nuclear power plant. For example, the institution recruited graduates with basic secondary education (9 classes) in 2020 for the specialty “Locksmith for Repair of Reactor Turbine Equipment” and “Locksmith for Control and Measuring Devices and Automation (Electromechanics)” (training period of three years). It recruits graduates on the basis of complete general secondary education (11 classes) for the specialty “Locksmith for Repair of Reactor Turbine Equipment” and “Turner” (training period of one year).
